Dalai Lama: Milan city council already divided on Tibet

The "left-centre" ruling coalition rejects a Milan's honorable citizenship for the Tibetan politician's proposal supported by centre-right opposition. On last June the most important Italian town's city council recognized for the Dalai Lama just a lower awarding.

Milan has already a position on Dalai Lama, and the theme is no more actual in city council's agenda.

On Monday 11/12, Milan's city council rejected a proposal about the honorary citizenship's concession to the Tibetan political leader proposal.

Democratic Party councillor Nicola Bertole told the so called "left-centre" ruling coalition already expressed its position about the Dalai Lama.

The right wing FLI party's councillor Manfredi Palmeri declared Milan city council should take a clear position about the Dalai Lama by recognizing Milan's honorary citizenship to the Tibetan politician.

A part of the left-centre ruling coalition - the Democratic Party, left wing parties SEL and FDS, the centre-left IDV party and the populist M5S movement - rejected the proposal.

In favor of Dalai Lama Milan's honorary citizenship voted the right opposition's forces - the PDL party and the Northern League - and several centrist parties - FLI and the Radical Party.

On June 2012, Milan's mayor Giuliano Pisapia - a left wing advocate who leads an "orange" coalition of left and centre-left parties - suspended the honorary citizenship's awarding to the Dalai Lama.

Supported by the vote of the city council's ruling coalition, mayor Pisapia awarded the Tibetan political leader by the less important awarding City Seal.

The centre-right opposition accused mayor Pisapia of fear from repercussions by China.

According to mayor Pisapia's opponents, Chinese government and businessmen could resign from the participation in Milan's 2015 Expo Universal Exposition in case of Dalai Lama honorable citizenship's awarding.
