Gas: Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia to h ave a Common energetic policy

Baltic Countires' Heads of State planed the GTS unification with the Poland's one. The lack of a common position on Baltic LNG terminal and Lithuanian nuclear power station.

A common energetic strategy for three EU countries. On Friday 11/30 Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia's Presidents met in Kaunas to establish a common Baltic States' energetic policy.

As Lithuanian President Dalija Grybauskaite declared, the three countries decided to unify their Gas Transportation System with the Poland's one.

Baltic States' decision respects the EU third package, a European  law to unify EU countries GTS in order to decrease Europe's dependence on Russia's gas supplies - which cover the 40% of EU energetic need.

Despite of common decisions, Baltic States did not still agree on a common LNG terminal.

Estonia is building a pipeline from a LNG terminal in Finland. At the same time, Lithuania has planed its own LNG terminal in Klaipeda, in order to import liquefied gas from Norway and Qatar.

Another point of disagreement is the Lithuania's plan to realize a nuclear power station in Visaginas.

Estonian President Henryk Ilves and Latvian Head of State Andris Berzins contested Visaginas nuclear power station's construction.

In Lithuania, President Grybauskaite endorses Visaginas nuclear power station, whereas the new socialdemocratic government opposes it.

Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia are strongly dependent on Russia's gas supplies - Moscow's gas covers the 90% of Baltic States' energetic need.

Lithuania, which obtains the EU presidency in 2013, aims to strengthen EU energetic independence and foster the EU Eastern Partnership policy with Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Moldova.
