HOLODOMOR: LET'S REMEMBER THE UKRAINIAN GENOCIDE

On Saturday 11/24 the world remembered the Great Famine which provoked the death of seven million of Ukrainians in 19332-1933. The amnesia of Western EU historians and Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych

One of the most terrible genocides in the history of the humanity forgotten in Western Europe, and also by some people in Ukraine. On Saturday 11/24 the world remembered the Holodomor: a genocide by starving, planed by USSR in 1932-1933 in order to kill Ukrainians.

During the Holodomor - "Great Famine" in Ukrainian - Soviet authorities did not allow Ukrainians to receive food supplies, nor to eat the food they alone produced, provoking seven million of dead because of the lack of meat, fish, vegetables and even flour.

The Ukrainians were considered by USSR authorities as enemies, so Stalin planed a ethnical cleasing in Ukraine, together with the forced collectivization of lands, imposed at the same time by the Soviets in the country.

The 1932-1933 Holodomor is one of the three Great Famines the Ukrainian People suffered during its history. First Holodomor was in 1920-1921 after the Bolshevik Revolution. The third one occurred in 1946-1947, after Ukraine has been suffered from Nazi and Soviet occupations.

The Holodomor is a genocide which is now forgotten by Western EU countries's historians. Moreover, also in Ukraine high Authorities seems to ignore what the Great Famine really was.

Few month after his election, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, fearing to irritate Putin's Russia, publicly sentenced the Holodomor was a great tragedy which unified several USSR countries as Ukraine.

President Yanukovych's position erased the efforts made after the Orange Revolution since 2005 by former Ukrainian Head of State Viktor Yushchenko, and former PM Yulia Tymoshenko, in order to remember Holodomor in an official way.

Despite of Yanukovych's position, the Holodomor is still remembered in Ukraine and in the world by Ukrainians and Ukrainian diaspora, in particular in Canada and in the USA.

The remember of the Great Famine is a moral imperative also for all EU citizens, in order to maintain the knowledge about a terrible page of the European history, which is still less known in the majority of western EU countries as Italy, France and Spain.
