POLAND TO RECONSIDER NORWAY IN ENERGY NATIONAL POLICY

Polish energy concern PGNiG planed to sell the gas exploited from Norway in Germany and in the Netherlands in order to obtain money to reinvest in Poland gas supplies diversification from Russia's projects. The different role Norway had assumed in Poland's vision.

A gas sale in foreign energy market to ensure money and energy incomes to foster national energy independence. As wnp.pl info portal reported, Polish energy concern PGNiG planed to sell in Germany and the Netherlands the gas exploited from Skarv Norwegian gas field.

Skarv gas field, whose shareholders are PGNiG, Brithish concern BP, Norwegian concern Statoil, and German-Norwegian joint venture E.On E&P Norge AS, is going to produce 43 bcd of natural gas.

PGNiG Chairwoman, Grazyna Piotrokowska Oliwa, told the Polish concern will reserve Skarv gas for German and Dutch energy markets in exchange of energy resources and money to reinvest in Poland national gas supplies diversification's projects.

Poland actually pays expensive costs to import natural gas from Russia, whose gas supplies cover the 40% of Poland's national energy need.

To diversify the energy dependence on Russia, Poland is also strongly supporting the European Commission's energy project planed to carry Azerbaijani and Turkmen gas directly to Europe.

According to Brussels's energy project, Poland is also building an LNG terminal in Swinoujscie, in Pomerania Region, to import in the EU liquefied natural gas from Qatar and the USA.

In addition to LNG, Polish government worked for a reverse exploitation of the Yamal-Europe pipeline, in order to import natural gas from Germany.

Through the Yamal-Europe pipeline Russia has delivered natural gas to Western Europe till the realization of Nordstream: a pipeline in the Baltic Sea seabed, planed by Moscow to carry natural gas directly to Germany and bypass some EU countries as Poland and the Baltic States.

Poland also bet on shale gas, giving licenses to several Polish and US company as PGNiG, Orlen and Chevron to exploit polish unconventional gas fields.

According to several data, Poland is the EU richest country for what concerns unconventional gas fields

Norway has been longer considered as a Poland's important energy supplier by Polish governments. In 2006, the conservative government lead by Order and Justice's leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski supported the direct import of natural gas from Norway in order to decrease the dependence on Russia.

In 2007, the Christian-democratic government lead by Civic Platform leader Donald Tusk halted the Norwegian project because of its hight cost, and preferred unify Polish energy policy with the European Commission's one.
