SHALE: LEFTIST LEADER BERSANI SUPPORTS THE EU SHOULD FOLLOW US EXAMPLE
Former Democratic Party Secretary and Candidate to PM praised the USA for shale gas development. Bersani also invited the EU and Italy to improve its national infrastructures.
MILANO - Shale gas is an important opportunity for the growth of EU economy, following the example of the USA. On Friday August the 2nd, Italian Democratic Party Past Secretary and PM Candidate Pierluigi Bersani stressed that Italy should reform its economical system opening to new sources of energy.

Bersani underlined that thanks to shale gas the USA evolved from an importer country to one of the most important gas world exporter.

For this reason, Bersani said that the EU and Italy should reform its economical structures, in order to follow the progress made by the USA, India and China.

"There are some countries that change fast, because the world is changing fast as well. If the EU does not reform its economy, there were counties as Italy that will continue to import gas just by pipelines".

During last electoral campaign, Bersani proposed a liberalization of theItalian energy sector, which is now controlled mainly by national concerns ENI and Enel, and few other companies as Edison.

Another Democratic Party politician supports shale revolution

Bersani's declaration in favor of shale gas -despite he never pronounced the word 'shale'- follows the statement of Italian Minister of the Economical Development Flavio Zanonato.

In May 2013, Minister Zanonato, who is also a Democratic Party politician- sentenced that Italy should build as soon as possible LNG terminals, in order to start importing shale gas from the USA.

Minister Zanonato  also sentenced that without shale gas imports and LNG terminals, Italy risks to be excluded from the international economy.
