A message to centre-left primary election's winner

On Sunday 12/2 a primary election's second turn is going to give the nomination to centre-left coalition's PM candidate. The  most urgent decisions the Italian Head of government should take to foster our nation.

Two candidates are going to challenge in a primary election's second turn to obtain the nomination as the centre-left coalition's PM official candidate.

The favorite between the two challengers is Pierluigi Bersani, Democratic Party's national secretary, supported by party's establishment and powerful CGIL work union.

The challenger is Matteo Renzi's, Florence's mayor and a Democratic Party's young Christian democrat party's member, who is opposed by party's establishment.

The winner will condition centre-left coalition's political strategy in two completely totally different ways.

For example, Bersani conceives the Democratic Party as a social-democratic political subject which has to establish a large alliance with left wing SEL party - whose leader Nichi Vendola obtained the third place in centre-left primaries' first turn - far left FDS parties' federation and the centrist parties UDC and API - whose leader Bruno Tabacci, classified fifth in the first turn.

On the other hand, Renzi has a social liberal vision of the new Italian centre-left coalition, and endorses the idea the Democratic Party - the most important centre-left coalition political force - should not establish any alliance with other political forces, trying to obtain also centre-right coalition deceived voters' support.

Despite of the first turn's gap - a 9% in favor of Bersani - it's difficult to predict a Renzi's defeat in the second turn.

For this reason, before knowing centre-left coalition PM candidate's name, I'm sending a message to the electoral competition's winner, trying to communicate what a centre-left candidate in my opinion should do.

For first, as the Italian PM, centre-left candidate has to start giving Italy a foreign policy's line supporting EU integration, the spread and the respect of democracy, HR and press freedom in ALL the world, and establish a tight alliance with the USA, which are now governed by the democratic President Barack Obama.

Strictly lied with foreign politics is the energetic policy centre-left candidate has to make. Italy has to quit a pro-Russian orientation, assumed by right wing Berlusconi's governments, which endangers our national security, and adopt a pro-EU line by supporting the European Commission's efforts to diversify Europe's gas supplies from Russia's quasi monopoly.

In particular, Italy must become the Azerbaijan's gas hub in Europe after the realization of TAP: a pipeline planed to carry 16 bcm of Azeri gas, which is opposed by Russia, Russian national gas major Gazprom, and Italian energetic concern ENI.

In internal politics, the priority is to renew Italians' confidence in the future. Centre-left coalition PM has to be the moral leader of a nation which lost the will to live, to growth and to develop their fatherland in economy

Italian PM has to create jobs, help young generations to believe in the future and oldest people to trust in the youth.

Centre-left coalition's candidate should follow the values of Christianity, Christian democracy, social liberalism, social Christianity, democracy, freedom and free-market.

Italian PM has to give back to the nation the decision's power. The Italians should choose directly not only Italian PM and MPs, but also the President of the Republic, as allowed in other - more developed than Italy - countries.

In the end, Italian PM has to foster culture and tourism. Italy is the fatherland of Dante, Petrarca, Manzoni, Leopardi and other important personalities who have given a contribute to world culture.

Italy is also the fatherland of Rome, Venice, Florence, Mantua, Ravenna, Milan and Verona: some of the most beautiful towns in the world. A few of money resources for culture and tourism means a betray to Italian national interest.

Bersani and Renzi have not only to challenge for a PM nomination, but also think about what kind of Italy is really necessary in a globalized world, in which Europe already lost its political power and almost all its moral energies.

I decided to write these propositions as a journalist and as an Italian who used to live several years abroad.

I'm addressing to centre-left coalition primaries' winner also as a citizen sick to be ashamed of his fatherland.

During last years, Berlusconi's right-wing policies and a post-communist mentality have damaged Italian identity and Italian's will to ameliorate the future of our nation.

For Bersani or Renzi it's now time to work hard.

Matteo Cazzulani
