GAS: CROATIA COMES BACK TO EUROPE

Croatian PM Zoran Milanovic endorses Zagreb's role as an Azeri gas' transit-state to Europe by the Ionic Adriatic Pipeline and the Trans Adriatic Pipeline. The most important European concerns take stakes in the Trans Anatolian Pipeline.

Not allowed by Russia in the Southstream pipeline, Croatia is now looking for a stronger position in the EU energetic policy. On Tuesday 11/6 Croatian PM Zoran Milanovic sentenced Croatia is an Azeri gas' transit-state in Europe.

During an official meeting with the Azeri Minister of the Economic Development, Stakhin Mustafayev, Milanovic sentenced Croatia is ready to play an important role in the construction of the Ionic Adriatic Pipeline - IAP.

The IAP is planed to carry 5 bcm per year of Azeri gas from Albania to Slovenia and Slovakia. The IAP pipeline is going to be tied with the Trans Adriatic Pipeline - TAP, which is planed to deliver 21 bcd per year of Azeri gas to the Italian Apulia region from the Greek-Turkish border via Albania.

The TAP pipeline, whose shareholders are Norwegian concern Statoil, Swiss company EGL, and Germany company E.On, is politically supported by the governments of Italy, Greece and Albania.

Following the decision of the three European states, British energetic concern BP and Italian company Enel also expressed their interest to participate in the project.

In addition to the IAP and TAP pipeline's projects, Croatia is an important country also for the LNG gas distribution in Europe. By the construction of an LNG terminal in Krk, Croatia will be able to deliver in the European Gas Transportation System several bcm of liquefied gas per year.

Moreover, the EU Northern-Southern Corridor will tie the Croatian LNG terminal in Krk with the LNG terminal of Swinoujscie, in Poland, which also will deliver liquefied gas from Qatar, Norway and the USA.

The LNG gas distribution project, as well as the TAP pipeline, is supported by the European Commission. Brussels approved a gas supplies's diversification plan, in order to decrease Russian national major Gazprom's hegemony in the European gas market.

Although Croatia supports the European Commission's policy, Zagreb was in favor of the transit in Croatian territory of the Southstream pipeline. The Southstream has been conceived by Russia to deliver in Europe 63 bcm of gas per year in Europe.

Moreover, the construction of the Southstream is conceived to stop the European Commission's plan to carry natural gas in Europe directly from Azerbaijan.

Despite of Zagreb's candidature, Russian national major Gazprom preferred to build the Southstream pipeline via Hungary, so Croatia stayed partially isolated in the international gas projects' geopolitics.

On Wednesday 11/7, the decision taken by British and Norwegian energetic concerns BP and Statoil and by the French company Total to take stocks in the Transanatolian Pipeline - TANAP - fostered the realization of the TAP pipeline.

The TANAP pipeline is planed to carry 24 bcm of Azeri gas per year from the border between Turkey and Georgia to the Turkish region in Europe, where the TANAP pipeline will be tied with the TAP.

According to Natural Gas Europe, Azeri energetic concern SOCAR sold a 29% of its 80% stakes in the TANAP to BP - 12% - Statoil - 12% and Total - 5%.

A 20% of the TANAP stakes is owned by Turkish energetic companies TPAO and Botas.
