GAS: RUSSIA, AZERBAIJAN AND THE CHALLENGE FOR GREECE

Russian national major Gazprom and Azeri energetic concern SOCAR are the main bidders for the Greek national gas company DEPA. The bid is extremely important for the European energetic security.

Greece is not only a country which risks to be excluded from the Eurozone, but it's also a geopolitical actor which can determinate the EU energetic situation.

On Monday 11/5, Russian national major Gazprom and Azeri energetic concern SOCAR became the main bidders for Greek national gas company DEPA.

The Greek government decided to sell DEPA in order to defeat the strong economical crisis Athens is now facing on.

As Reuters reported, DEPA company controls also the EPA and the DESFA companies, which are responsible respectively in the gas sell and in the managing of Greek national gas transportation system.

The bid on the DEPA gas company is a question strictly lied to the European energetic security. A Greek national gas company's control by the Russian national major or the Azeri energetic concern will lead Athens to support two different gas pipelines Russia and the European Commission are going to realize to increase gas supplies for Europe.

If DEPA will be controlled by Gazprom, Greece will support the Southstream pipeline's realization. The Southstream, a 63 bcm of gas per year pipeline, has been planed by Gazprom, in partnership with Italian concern ENI, German company Wintershall, and French company EDF, to deliver more Russian gas directly to Europe.

Southstream pipeline's realization will also allow Russia to thwart the EU gas supplies' diversification policy. The European Commission planed the construction of several pipelines - the Second EU Corridor - to carry Azeri gas directly to Europe and decrease Russian hegemony on the EU gas market.

Another scenario is predictable if SOCAR will win the bid on DEPA. This eventuality will lead the Greek national gas company to support the realization of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline - TAP: a 21 bcd of gas per year pipeline conceived to carry Azeri gas to the Apulia region, in Italy, from the border between Turkey and Greece via Albania.

TAP pipeline's shareholders are the Norwegian concern Statoil, the Swiss company EGL, and the German company E.On. A concrete interest in the TAP has been communicated also by BP British concern and SOCAR.

Following the political support given to the TAP by the governments of Italy, Greece and Albania, also Italian company Enel and the Greek DEPA declared the interest in a partnership for the pipeline's realization.

If Gazprom will bid the DEPA gas company, Greece will pertain to the list of the EU countries which, mostly in the West - as Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands - strongly support Russian energetic policies in Europe.

On the other hand, if the Greek national gas company will be bought by SOCAR, Athens will play a fundamental role in the EU energetic common policy's realization, which is supported by several Central-Eastern European countries as Poland, Lithuania, Czech Republic, and Romania.
