GAS: SLOVAKIA TO HAVE A NEW ENERGY STRATEGY

Slovakian PM Robert Fico agreed on the national energy company SPP's sell to Czech Energetycny a Prymuslovi Holding after obtaining low gas prices for the population. Bratislava still remains an important Russian gas' transit state in Central Europe.

Low gas prices and sure gas supplies are the two goals of Slovakia energy policy. On Wednesday 12/12, Slovakian government agreed on the sell of the 49% of Slovakia's energy company SPP's stakes from the German E.On and French Suez Gaz de France companies to the Czech company Energetycny a Prymuslovy Holding.

As Gazeta Wyborcza reported, Slovakian PM Robert Fico agreed on the operation after Czech EPH ensured not to increase gas prices for the population. In October 2012, PM Fico posed a veto on SPP stake's sell to the Czech company because of the lack of a gas price decrement 's promise.

The 49% of SPP stakes has been sold to E.On and Suez Gaz de France in 2002, but the Slovakian government mantained the control on the majority of the national energy company's stakes and the right of veto on SPP border of chiefs decisions.

Once solved the situation of the national energy company, Slovakia is going to assume a new role in new Europe's energy geography.

As UaEnergy info portal reported, Slovakian Minister of Foreign Affairs Miroslav Lajcak sentenced Slovakia will play a crucial role in Russian gas transit from Germany, Hungary, Austria and Czech Republic to Ukraine.

Minister Lajcak also underlined that current Slovakia's energy situation is better than the new one, as Bratislava plays a fundamental role in Russia's gas supplies to Europe.

Nevertheless, Russia's energy policy obliged Slovakia to change its position in Europe without losing its importance as a transit state.

Russia realized several pipelines in order to increase Europe's dependence on Russian gas supplies.

The Nordstream - a pipeline realized in Baltic Sea seabed - delivers 55 bcm of Russian gas from Russia to Germany, bypassing several EU countries as Poland and Lithuania.

The Southstream pipeline - whose realization started last 12/7 - will carry 63 bcm of Russian gas from Russia to Austria via the Black Sea seabed, Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Slovenia and Italy.

Southstream will bypass Romania, Moldova and Ukraine, and will block the European Commission's project to realize new pipelines to carry Azerbaijan's gas directly to Europe and decrease EU energy dependence on Russia.

Once isolated, Ukraine decided to import 57 mcm of the Russian gas delivered in Germany by the Nordstream via Poland and Hungary.

Slovakia proposed Kyiv to use Slovakian national pipelines to increase Russian gas' import from Germany to 20 bcm.

Actually, Slovakia is the second most important Russia gas' transit state to Western Europe after Ukraine.

From the Ukrainian border, Russian gas flows via all Slovakia's territory till the Western part of the country, where a pipeline goes on to Czech Republic and Germany, and another reaches Austria and Italy.

According to official datas, in 2011 Slovakia carried 50 bcm of Russian gas, taking for its national import just 6 bcm. Russia's gas supplies cover the 40% of all EU energy need.
