Northern League national secretary Roberto Maroni's candidature is a civic project for a party traditionally strong in Lombardy, which is now facing an uncertain electoral rush.
On Monday 11/12 the national secretary of the regionalist former ruling political force, which supported together with the right wing PDL party former Lombardy's governor Roberto Formigoni during last two years, accepted the official request the general national Northern League committee sent him.
According to the official party's statement, Roberto Maroni is the person Northern League's electors preferred during special party's internal primaries led in several Lombardian places last 10/20.
Roberto Maroni, a 57 years-old politician who served in the national government during several legislatures as a Minister of Welfare and a Minister of Interiors, stated he will lead a coalition of the Northern League with civic lists composed by non-politicians and other conservative political forces.
By his official declarations, de facto Maroni did not close the door to former PDL allies in a conservative coalition similar to the one which is ruling Lombardy since 2010.
Anyway the PDL seems to keep its original position in favour of former Milan's mayor Gabriele Albertini's candidature, although the same Albertini did not yet confirm his electoral campaign's start.
A candidate's choose is also a hot topic for the centre-left opposition. A Democratic Party of Lombardy's regional committee meeting will probably allow the candidature of Umberto Ambrosoli.
The Milanese lawyer, chosen by the Democratic Party of Lombardy as its official candidate, will challenge in a primary election against left wing SEL party councillor Giulio Cavalli, centre-left IDV party's spokesman Stefano Zamponi, and the independent left wing doctor Alessandra Kunstermann.
