Lombardy Region: the regional election to be held on 3/10

Right wing PDL party national leaders support a common candidate with the Northern League, whereas the centre-left coalition is going to held a "civic" primary election. A longer electoral campaign should help the right-regionalist wing forces

Lombardian electors should vote in the beginning of February, but the election day has been postponed a month later. On Friday 11/16 the Italian Head of State Giorgione Napolitano fixed the Lombardian election day on next 3/10.

The decision is lied to the possibility of heading in a common election day both the regional and the national legislative elections, which originally have been scheduled on April 2013.

The election date's change can modify the Lombardian political scenario, because a month longer electoral campaign could help the ruling right wing coalition, which is formed by the right wing PDL party and the regionalist Northern League, to keep the control on Lombardy Region's government.

The ruling right wing coalition in Lombardy Region collapsed after the Northern League decided to present its own candidate, the national committee leader, and former minister of the Interior in national government, Roberto Maroni.

Following the Northern League's choice, the PDL party's MEP and former Milan's mayor Gabriele Albertini, endorsed by Lombardy Region governor Roberto Formigoni, also presented his candidature to represent all the moderates of Lombardy.

PDL national leader Angelino Alfano and PDL founder former Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi suggest to find a common candidate for the PDL-Northern League coalition.

Nevertheless, Albertini confirmed he will run as a Lombardy Region's governor candidate in the regional election even without the official PDL party's support.

A longer electoral campaign could represent a problem for the centre-left coalition, which has more possibility to win the election in the most important Italian region if the right coalition is separated.

On next 11/15, the centre-left political forces are going to invest the coalition's official candidate in a so called "civic" primary election.

The Democratic Party of Lombardy's candidate Umberto Ambrosoli, a Milanese lawyer, obtained the support of left wing SEL party.

Ambrosoli is also supported by Milan's mayor Giuliano Pisapia, well known Professor Nando Dalla Chiesa and famous doctor Umberto Veronesi.

During his first public speech in Cremona on Sunday 11/19, Ambrosoli also told he's open to the civil society.

Another doctor, Alessandra Kustermann, is an independent candidate to centre-left primary election, who is supported by a left wing electorate.

Socialist Party and Milan City Council member Riccardo Biscardini is the third candidate who is going to run in centre-left primaries.

Moreover, also the centre-left IDV party's spokesman Stefano Zamponi declared the intention to take part in the primary election.
