THE LOCAL DATA OF CENTRE-LEFT COALITION PRIMARY ELECTION

Democratic Party’s national secretary won in almost all Regions with a strong support in the South. Florence’s young mayor ahead just in Tuscany. In Lombardy Bersani is strong in Southern provinces as Cremona and Mantua, whereas Renzi obtained the most of his support in Lecco and Como without winning in any town of the most important Italian region.

A total victory in all the country ensures the Democratic Party’s national secretary Pierluigi Bersani the centre-left coalition leadership’s nomination on next parliamentary elections.

After the quasi definitive vote’s count, Bersani, who obtained in all Italy the 60% of votes, won in 19 of the 20 Italian regions.

Bersani obtained his best electoral result in Calabria and in other Southern regions, where he has been voted by around the 70% of voters.

In Northern Italian regions, Bersani obtained around the 60% of votes, whereas in the centre he won with a strong majority in Lazio and Abruzzo.

Bersani’s competitor Matteo Renzi, Florence’s young mayor who obtained in all Italy the 39% of votes, won just in Tuscany. Moreover, he obtained around the 45% of votes in Marche, Umbria and Aosta Valley, where he won in primary election’s first turn.

Renzi obtained another important result in Piemonte region, where he has been voted by the 42% of voters.

Bersani won on Renzi also in almost all Italian towns. In Rome, Naples, Palermo, Genoa and Bolonia, Bersani obtains around the 70% of votes, whereas in Milan and Turin he has been voted by around the 60% of voters.

Renzi won just in Florence, the town he’s the mayor, and obtained good results, without winning as he did in the first turn, in Ancona and Perugia.

Also interesting is the analysis of Lombardy’s data. In the most important Italian region Bersani won with the 60% of votes against the 40% of votes Renzi obtained.

Bersani obtained the best score in Lombardian “red” strongholds as Cremona and Mantua, and also in Lodi, Pavia, Milan and Monza he has been voted by more than the 60% of voters.

Renzi obtained his best score in Lecco and Como, where he won in Primary election’s first turn. Moreover, Renzi has been voted by more than the 40% of voters also in other traditionally moderate towns in Lombardy as Varese and Sondrio, and in two more Northern towns as Brescia and Bergamo.

Pierluigi Bersani, a former Ministry of the Economic Development who has been supported by powerful CGIL work union and Democratic Party’s establishment, will be the centre-left coalition leader.

Bersani conceives the Democratic Party as a social-democratic political force which is able to govern the country just as the main party of a large coalition with other centre-left parties – left wing SEL party and the centrist API party – the centrist UDC party and the far left wing FDS parties’ federation.

Matteo Renzi is a Christian democrat Democratic Party’s member who took part in the electoral competition despite of Democratic Party establishment’s opposition.

Renzi declared he will stay Florence’s mayor and will support Bersani after centre-left coalition primary election’s result.

Renzi endorsed the idea of a political class’ renewal, conceived the Democratic Party as a social liberal force similar to US Democrats, and supported the Democratic Party must attract centre-right political forces’ voters without any alliance with centrist or left wing parties.
