Ukraine: the democratic opposition protests against President Yanukovych's frauds

Democratic opposition new deputies condemn Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych for irregularity, and declared they are ready to resign from their mandate to invalidate the parliamentary election. Also a mixed electoral law allowed the pro-presidential coalition to form a majority in the new Parliament.

On monday 11/5 more than thousand people protested in front of the Ukrainian Central Electoral Commission against frauds and irregularity made by President Yanukovych's establishment.

According to Radio Liberty, the protest has been organized by the three party of the orange opposition: the United Opposition "Fatherland", the UDAR party, and the far-right wing "Freedom" party.

The United Opposition "Fatherland"'s leader Arseniy Yatsenyuk accused the President Viktor Yanukovych of the organization of frauds and irregularities in favor of his Party of Regions, which is politically supported by the Presidential Administration, and financed by the most influent Ukrainian oligarchs.

Yatsenyuk sentenced also that all the opposition parties's new deputies are ready to resign from their mandate in order to invalidate a new parliament's convocation, and oblige President Yanukovych to call for new election.

Moreover, the United Opposition "Fatherland"'s leader invited CEC chief Volodymyr Shapovalov to recognize the orange candidates's victory in several majoritarian colleges, which are still contested eight days after the end of the consultation.

In particular, in a majoritarian college in Kyiv, the Local Electoral Commission invalidated all the votes for the opposition's candidate Viktor Romanyuk, who was defeating the Party of Regions' candidate Tetyana Zasukha.

In 223 Kyiv college, the Local Electoral Commission declared the victory of the Party of Regions Viktor Pylypshyn candidate on the Svoboda candidate Yuri Levchenko, who was leading the consultation after the 80% of counted ballots.

In a college in Mykolayiv region, the Local Electoral Commission excluded journalists, opposition and international observers from the ballots' count, and recognized the victory of the Party of Regions's candidate Vitaliy Travianko on the Opposition's one Arkadiy Kornatsky.

According to the Kyiv Post, frauds have been registered in several majoritarian colleges in Kherson, Vinnytsya and Cherkasy regions, where journalist and opposition's observers have been even beaten by the police.

Ukrainain parliamentary election has ben criticized by the OSCE because of the lack of transparency and pair conditions between the parties.

Moreover, the OSCE also accused the Party of Regions of the use of public resources and the leading of electoral campaign during the election day.

On Monday 11/5 also NATO General Secretary Anders Fogh Rasmussen criticized Ukrainian authorities for the Opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko's absence in the parliamentary elections.

Yulia Tymoshenko, who led in 2004 the Ukrainian democratic process, known as the "Orange Revolution", is the most important victim of a political repression which jailed several orange opposition's politicians.

Although frauds and irregularity, the 99% count of ballots recognized the Party of Regions has the first place with a 30% of votes, followed by the United Opposition Fatherland and the UDAR Party, respectively with the 26% and the 14% of votes.

At the fourth place, the communist obtained a 13%, and the "Freedom" party a 10% of votes.

Although the opposition obtained the majority of Ukrainians' votes, a mixed electoral law, which assigns the half of mandates in the parliament to the winners in majoritarian colleges, is going to ensure to the Party of Regions a solid pro-Yanukovych majority in the new Verkhovna Rada composition.

According to official datas, the Party of Regions won in 114 majoritarian colleges, the United Opposition "Fatherland" in 42, the "Freedom" party in 11, and the UDAR party in 5.

Moreover, most of the 43 independents who won elections in several majoritarian colleges, after obtaining finances from the Presidential Administration, are going to ensure the Party of Regions their votes to form a pro-presidential coalition.
