This analysis is on political frictions between the United States and Canada following Obama's opposition to the Keystone XL, a pipeline planed by Canadian energy major Trans Canada to carry Canadian crude sand oil through the United States from the Canadian state of Alberta to Texas refineries, and furthermore to the world market.

The clash over energy relations between the United States and Canada has a direct consequence for the European Union and other world markets who consider United States shale gas and Canada's crude sand oil to be important energy resources in order to diversify energy supplies and strengthen energy security in so doing.
